Make Big Switch and cut those energy bills

Local residents are being invited to save hundreds of pounds on their gas and electricity bills by joining a new scheme to reduce prices.

Kirklees Council has joined other local authorities in Bradford, Leeds, Wakefield and York to work with Community Energy Direct and consumer champions Which? to seek the best possible deal from the energy companies.

Everyone who lives in Kirklees can sign up for the deal, which works in the following way:

• Households would register to switch energy supplier

• Their details are passed to Which? who then invite the energy suppliers to put forward their best deal.

In addition to the possibility of cheaper energy, those signing up will have access to information on how to reduce their energy consumption, as well as energy saving products.

Cllr Mehboob Khan, Leader of Kirklees Council, said: “The more who register, the more likely we are to get a better deal from the energy suppliers. Households can register without making any obligation to switch... This is a really simple way for households to tackle the challenge of ever-rising gas and electricity prices."

He added: This scheme will also identify local community champions who will work with people in their own communities as well as organisations, charities and social groups, to develop a grassroots ‘Energysmart’ initiative which will empower local people to take charge of their energy consumption, and bring real changes and benefits to everyone who participates.”
